Invisible Art: Crayon Resist

Are you looking for an art activity that inspires creativity and has a little flair of magic? Let me introduce you to Crayon Resist watercolors! This fun project is good for older preschoolers due to the nature of watercolors. The best part about this activity is that you can be as creative as you like - you can draw pictures, abstract designs, or even just wavy lines. Let’s see what amazing art you can design today.

Supplies Needed:

White Paper (I used cardstock)

White crayons

Watercolor Paints

Water and paintbrush

What To Do:

Begin by drawing your design on the white paper with your white crayon. It can be hard to see what you are drawing, so work in an area with good lighting. Don’t worry - your picture will become more visible, soon. There is a bit of magic involved with this project. You can faintly see the crayon on the paper below. I traced my hands and drew designs all over them for my first picture. For my second picture, I cut out a circle and drew The Death Star from Star Wars (I saw this idea on Pinterest!). Next, use your watercolor paints to completely cover your paper. Notice how the paint does not adhere to the crayon? This is how your artwork will magically appear as you paint! You may choose one color or use a variety of colors to make your picture colorful and fun. Watercolors do require a generous amount of water in order to blend well on the paper. Be sure to use newspaper or something similar under your artwork to protect your table.

Your Finished Product:

Allow your paint to dry before displaying your artwork. I hope you had as much as I did!
