Making colorful water letters is a fun way to practice literacy and math skills, hone your fine motor skills, learn science concepts, and make beautiful art. This activity can be set up in minutes and can be fun for all ages. Your level of difficulty is up to you!
Supplies Needed:
You will need paper plates, cups of water, food coloring, a paintbrush, and water droppers.
How to Make Your Letters
Start by drawing your letter on a plate, using only a paintbrush and water. Then add a few drops of colored water to the letter made with water.
Now for the magic…
Pick up your plate and gently move it so that the colored water moves along the shape of the letter. Notice how it stays in the lines? That is because of cohesion, a property of water that causes water molecules to bind to other water molecules.
What’s next?
You can expand on this idea by drawing anything you like - letters, numbers, shapes…
You can even create a piece of original artwork. Try drawing a flower or a rainbow!
Use different colors to see what happens when they mix. Can you make a new color by mixing two other colors?
