Literacy Skills

Many parents have asked, “What can I do to help my child while school is closed?”

My answer is simple. “Read to your children.”

When we read to our children, especially when starting at a young age, we are helping them to develop their language and literacy skills. As we read and expose them to language and vocabulary, we are also helping them to increase their concentration and and to practice discipline. Listening to stories helps children to develop their imagination as they create pictures in their mind and predict what may happen next. And there is no doubt that reading with your children helps to build a bond between parent and child. Many will choose to incorporate a special reading time into the daily routine, such as naptime or bedtime. You may even find that taking time to read a book when your child is upset or overly active is an effective calming tool.
