Cloud Writing

We know it is important for our children to practice their writing skills, but who wants to sit at home and do worksheets all day? Children learn best through play, and worksheets are not play. They say “work” right in the word! I love to practice writing skills using mediums other than a pencil and paper, and so do our kiddos. Grab some sidewalk chalk and head outside, use bathtub crayons on the shower wall, or use butcher paper to make a huge mural. There are lots of ways to practice writing letters and numbers.

What is Cloud Writing? Cloud writing is using shaving cream (or whipped cream, if you have young children) and your fingers to create numbers, letters, and shapes. This is so easy to set up and is lots of fun, with a bit of sensory skills added in!

Supplies Needed:

Shaving Cream or Whipped Cream

White Paper

Scissors

Marker

Working Surface (a tray or large plate will work well)

What to Do:

  1. Begin by cutting out cloud shapes from the white paper. Cutting is an excellent skill to practice, so have your child help to make the clouds.

  2. Use the marker to write on your clouds. Write the letters, numbers,or shapes that you want to practice.

  3. Place some of your shaving cream on the working surface and spread it around.

  4. Use your finger to write the shapes, numbers, and letters on the clouds. When you are done, erase your work by smoothing out the shaving cream and try again!
